The International Women’s Day 2022 date is fast approaching us on the 8th of March. This day is dedicated to celebrating womenkind, acknowledging the female race’s impact on the world and pushing for equality. With this year’s International Women’s day theme in 2022 as “Break the bias”, organizers and supporters will dedicate themselves to encouraging a planet free of bias, stereotypes, and discrimination.

International Women’s Day is renowned in America. They dedicate an entire month to honouring females while assessing their current societal contributions and identifying the vital roles they have played throughout American history. This year, for International Women’s Day 2022, the Soshell team are here to break the bias and share their own stories.

 

Where Did International Women’s Day Originate From?

IWD has been around for well over a century. The first-ever gathering was held in the USA in 1911 and was supported by a whopping one million-plus people. To this day, the celebration and day of inspiring and educating are targeted at all audiences. It is not country, group or organization specific.

How Are We, At Soshell, Going To Celebrate IWD?

Here at Soshell, our team is predominantly female. Because of this, we love to get involved in International Women’s Day 2022 UK and celebrate the skillset that we bring into our business. Focusing on the theme this year, we have decided to challenge some of the stereotypes we have been labelled with over the years; within the Marketing industry and beyond.

Our Director, Ellie Clark, consistently ensures she creates a workplace where women AND men can thrive. Ensuring a message of equality, Ellie implements personal development plans, as well as enforces group activities in which morale is enhanced and every individual has the best chances of flourishing in their roles.

Here’s how Ellie & her team are breaking the stereotypes in 2022:

 

ELLIE CLARK, DIRECTOR & HEAD OF STRATEGY

I’m a woman, that doesn’t mean you should underestimate me.

“I think in business especially, I feel I’ve had many encounters where males have assumed that I don’t know what I’m on about or why I’m there, and therefore, I should prove myself. It feels as though I’m starting on the back foot.”

SHANNON MUGFORD, SEO & CONTENT EXECUTIVE

I’m friendly, that doesn’t mean I’m a flirt.

“I am the loud one. My volume is often higher than others in every social situation and at work. This lends itself to me being outgoing. I am a people person; therefore, I love chatting with people from all walks of life. However, I have had many experiences where my being so forthcoming towards a man has led to an inappropriate reply or the unnecessary assumption that I am being flirtatious. Unless said otherwise and you have the facts, it is not ok to just assume.”

BECKY HARDING, PPC MANAGER

I’m a woman, that doesn’t mean I can’t lead.

“Within the workplace and even socially, men typically have less respect for a woman in a leadership role and are less likely to follow directions when compared to a male giving the same instructions. In previous roles, I have experienced this type of behaviour when junior staff members would ignore instructions from female team leaders. However, if the male team leader led them the same, these juniors would then carry out this task without question.”

 

KATIE SAYER, SOCIAL MEDIA EXECUTIVE

I wear low cut tops, that doesn’t mean I’m asking for attention.

“Women are constantly judged for their bodies and the clothing they wear. This is just one example of sexism we face day to day. It’s not right that my body and what I wear equates to negative attention. I have been cat-called on numerous occasions, from my time at university, walking home from lectures, or on a night out. Regardless of the time of day and what I’m wearing, it’s NEVER ok to do this”.

 

ALICIA DING, DIGITAL MARKETING APPRENTICE

I’m a woman who shows my skin, that doesn’t mean it’s yours to touch.

“On many occasions and from a young age, whether it’s my ankles showing or my legs, I’ve noticed several men then thinking it’s acceptable to look, comment or physically touch me. Every woman is worthy and should be treated respectfully, without question.”
